What You Actually Need to Rent an Exotic Car in California
Renting a supercar isn't complicated, but it isn't the same as renting a sedan at the airport either. Here's the full list of requirements, with no surprises left for the paperwork.
Most of the friction in exotic rentals comes from people finding out about a requirement on the day rather than a week earlier. This is the whole list. If you're renting in Los Angeles or Orange County — Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Newport Beach, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Anaheim — everything below applies the same way.
1. A valid driver's license
A current US license is all that's needed for domestic renters. If you're visiting from abroad, bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit; get the IDP before you fly, because it can't be issued in the United States. Digital licenses aren't accepted on their own — bring the physical card.
2. Age — higher than you're used to
Standard rental companies open up at 21 or 25. Exotics sit higher, and the exact minimum varies by car: the more valuable and more powerful the vehicle, the higher it goes. There's no single number that covers the whole fleet.
This is worth asking about first, before you fall in love with a specific car. Call and tell us your age and we'll tell you immediately which vehicles are open to you.
3. Insurance
This is the single most misunderstood part of the process. You need one of the following:
- Your own auto policy with comprehensive and collision coverage that extends to a rented vehicle at this value. Call your insurer and ask specifically about the coverage limit on a non-owned vehicle — many personal policies cap out well below the value of a supercar.
- Coverage arranged through us, added to the rental.
Credit card rental coverage is generally not sufficient. Most card benefits explicitly exclude exotic and high-value vehicles. Read the exclusion list before you rely on it.
4. A refundable security deposit
Every exotic rental carries a deposit — a hold on a credit card in the renter's own name, released after the car is returned undamaged with a full tank. It's not a fee and you don't lose it. The amount scales with the car, and each vehicle's page on our site lists its own deposit alongside the day rate.
The card must belong to the person driving. We can't run a deposit on someone else's card, even a family member's.
5. Mileage awareness
Rentals include a daily mileage allowance with a per-mile rate beyond it. Around town in LA or the OC you'll never touch it. A coast run or a canyon day can, so mention your plans when you book and we'll price the miles into the quote up front instead of billing them later.

How the booking actually goes
- Pick dates and a car. Each vehicle page shows a live availability calendar, so you can see which dates are already taken before you call.
- Get a quote. We confirm the day rate, mileage, deposit and delivery cost in one number. No line items appear later.
- Send documents. License, proof of insurance, and the card for the deposit. This is a ten-minute step if you have them ready.
- Delivery and walkaround. We bring the car to you anywhere in LA or Orange County, photograph its condition together, and walk you through the controls, the drive modes, and the nose lift if it has one.
- Return. Full tank, same condition, deposit released.
The things that actually cost people money
Damage claims on exotic rentals are boringly predictable, and almost all of them are avoidable:
- Front splitters on driveways and parking ramps. By a wide margin the most common. Use the nose lift, approach at an angle, go at walking pace.
- Wheels on curbs. Wide, low-profile tires on large forged wheels are expensive and unforgiving. Park further out than feels necessary.
- Wrong fuel. Premium only, every time.
- Interior damage. Light-colored leather and denim, sunscreen, or a drink lid that isn't on properly.
If something happens, tell us immediately rather than at return. It is always cheaper and simpler handled the same day.
Common questions
How old do you have to be to rent an exotic car in California?
Higher than a standard rental, and it varies by vehicle — the more valuable the car, the higher the minimum. Tell us your age when you call and we'll confirm which cars in the fleet are available to you.
Do I need my own insurance to rent a supercar?
You need comprehensive and collision coverage that extends to a rented vehicle of this value, or coverage arranged through us. Credit card rental benefits usually exclude exotics, so don't rely on them without reading the exclusions.
Is the security deposit refundable?
Yes. It's a hold on a credit card in the renter's name, released once the car is returned undamaged with a full tank. Each car's page lists its deposit amount.
Can someone else pay for my rental?
The deposit has to sit on a credit card belonging to the person driving. Gifting a rental is possible — call us and we'll walk you through how to structure it.
Can I add a second driver?
Additional drivers can be added if they meet the same age, license and insurance requirements. They must be listed before the car goes out — an unlisted driver voids coverage.
