Renting a Supercar in Los Angeles: A Neighborhood Guide

Beverly Hills and West Hollywood

This is the reason most people rent in the first place, and it works exactly as advertised. Rodeo Drive, Sunset, Beverly Drive — slow speeds, wide streets, valets everywhere, and an audience that actually knows what it's looking at. Everything here is about presence rather than pace, so pick the loudest, lowest thing you can get comfortable in.

Two practical notes. Valet at the Beverly Hills hotels and on Sunset is competent with exotics, but tell them where the nose is and hand over the key rather than assume. And street parking enforcement in Beverly Hills is relentless — read the sign twice.

Malibu and Pacific Coast Highway

The single best drive available from Los Angeles, and the one most worth the day rate. Head out through Santa Monica, up PCH past Topanga and Malibu, and either turn around at Point Dume or keep going toward Oxnard. If you want corners instead of coastline, cut inland on Malibu Canyon or Latigo Canyon and come back over the hills into Calabasas.

Time it early. PCH between 11am and 6pm on a summer weekend is a parking lot with an ocean view. Leave at seven and you'll have the road to yourself for two hours.

Santa Monica and Marina del Rey

Great for the drive along Ocean Avenue, harder for everything else. The parking structures are old, tight, and full of speed bumps that are unkind to low front ends. If you're staying in Santa Monica, ask your hotel about oversized or valet-only parking before you book the car — it's a five-minute call that avoids a very expensive scrape.

Downtown LA

DTLA is the best-looking backdrop in the city and the worst surface. The bridges, the Arts District, and the Sixth Street and Fourth Street overpasses shoot beautifully, which is why every photographer in Southern California works down there. Just go on a Sunday morning, watch for potholes and the light-rail tracks, and don't leave anything visible in the car.

Pasadena and the foothills

Underrated. Pasadena itself is pleasant and easy — wide boulevards, good restaurants, decent parking. What makes it worth the trip is what's above it: the Angeles Crest Highway starts in La Cañada and climbs for fifty miles of properly good road. If your reason for renting is driving rather than being seen, base your day out of Pasadena instead of the Westside.

Delivery is the way to do it in LA

Los Angeles is the one city where getting to a rental counter can genuinely cost you two hours of the day you paid for. We bring the car to you — a house in the Hollywood Hills, a hotel in Beverly Hills, a loft in DTLA, a short-term rental in Venice, or the curb at a studio lot in Burbank. You get the walkaround where you're standing, and the day starts when the car arrives instead of when you finally find the garage.

Timing your day around the traffic

This matters more in LA than anywhere else in the state. Three rules that hold up:

• Before 9am and after 8pm is when the city is actually drivable. Canyon roads, PCH and Mulholland are all best in the first two hours of daylight.
• The 405 is not a plan. If your route depends on it, build in an hour. Sepulveda over the hill is often quicker and much better to drive.
• Weekday evenings beat weekends for being seen. Sunset on a Thursday night has the crowd without the gridlock.

One LA-specific hazard worth naming: driveway aprons. The steep entries on hillside homes in the Hills, Bel Air and Calabasas are the number-one cause of front-splitter damage on rented exotics. Approach at an angle, take it walking pace, and if you're unsure, park on the street.

How far ahead to book

LA runs on an events calendar. Award season, big fight and game weekends, festival weekends, and the whole of summer tighten availability fast — figure three to six weeks for anything on a Friday or Saturday. Midweek in the off-season, same-week bookings are usually fine. Because the picture changes daily, each car on the site carries its own live availability calendar rather than a promise in an article.
